Initiating a data technology-powered AI sports commenting project. Developed “Mr. Zuno” for NHK to provide comments on baseball programs.

Through a commission from NHK, we will start a project to provide professional baseball commentary using data technology such as deep learning and data mining. We have developed “Mr. Zuno” as a sports commentary system. During the Japanese professional baseball season of 2017, we will aim to utilize this system in the NHK BS program. Moreover, a special behind the scene program will be broadcasted today from 16:45(JST) on NHK BS-1. For details, please visit URL: http://nhk.jp/zuno-san.

In developing the sports commentary system, we applied deep learning technology, a technology which has been seen in areas such as Go and Shogi to compete with human being.

Specifically, by learning over 3 million batting data provided by Data Stadium since 2004, we will predict the distribution, the winning / losing, the ranking etc, and apply this data mining to analyze trends of players who could not be found by human commentators and pitching according to game situation.

Next year, we will promote development so that Mr. Zuno can appear as a commentator on the baseball related program of NHK BS. In the future, we would like to apply also to sports other than baseball, and also to develop methods that can enjoy sports from various perspectives.
