In 2023, together with NTT and the general incorporated association WITH ALS, we launched “Project Humanity”, the world’s first initiative to enable real-time avatar control in the metaverse.
In the same year, we presented a live performance at the Ars Electronica Festival, a festival of art, advanced technology and culture held in Linz, Austria, together with Masatane Muto.　In the avatar control for “Project Humanity”, the user wears a myoelectric sensor that acquires bio-information from the body, and the biological information obtained from the user’s micro-muscle activity is converted into operational information to achieve free control by avatar. In the laboratory tests, we confirmed that myoelectric sensor data could be obtained from the parts of the body (neck, arms, legs) where the myoelectric sensor was installed.
On the Ars Electronica stage, Masatane used his avatar to recreate the physical expression he had used as a DJ to get the audience excited, by operating his avatar with his own body, which moved slightly at the will of those living with ALS in the metaverse space.
